For Christmas this year I didn't want to get candles, towels and candy. I wanted to give a gift that would mean something, not just sit on a shelf. Most of my friends and family are very health oriented so I thought, why not herbs?
I started investigating the various types of herbs and plants and was blown away. Pineapple sage, comfrey, St. Johnswort, eucalyptus, thyme, the list went on and on. Herbs for medicinal purposes, to flavor food, the add aroma. Now my biggest problem was which one was best for whom! I decided to chose a couple different ones per person and give them the opportunity to switch among themselves.
The best part of giving a gift that is useful and creative shows that you really put some thought into it. I'm still going to throw a few items in the plant gift bag for fun. A book on how to care for your plant, a pair of gardening gloves, recommended plant food, or perhaps a pretty pot. Getting the gift attractively presented is going to be half the fun.
Visit any local nursery or google the Internet for a herb specialist near you. It can also be fun looking up the usefulness of each plant. The history of medicine, spices, aromas and the useful benefits of each different species can really be addictive. Before long, you'll be starting a collection of your own.
