How to make your hotel room feel like a home away from home

Whenever I stay in a hotel I always feel like the girl in Hoopper's painting. Remember? She's sitting on the bed. She seems to have arrived. On one corner there is the half-opened suitcase and further away there are the shoes she's probably taken off the minute she walked in and sat on the bed. She looks sad in the bare hotel room. I have always felt like this, because hotel rooms are so impersonal. My way to make it more personal was piling the newspapers. I never wanted it done, because anyway you never get this at home and I switched on the bedside lamps rather than the main lamps on the ceiling. Clothes scattered everywhere also helps to feel like at home and if you're going to stay several days I'd advise to get a plant and perhaps a beautiful poster that makes you smile the moment you walk in that room that has held so many people before you and it was with no trace of them as soon as the chambermaid went in with her cleanning tools.
