Nothing compares to a home-cooked meal. And since the closest a college student can get to a home-cooked meal is cooking themselves, it is essential to have some cookware on hand.
As the most important part of cooking is eating, the most important cookware for a college student to own is silverware. For dorm living, a full set is too much; just one or two forks, knives, and spoons will do the trick. Not as many dishes available to make dirty translates into not as many dishes to wash in the long run. This applies to bowls and plates, too. Just one or two of each should do the trick for dorm living. If the student rents an apartment, this number can obviously be adjusted.
For pots and pans, I keep a small tub in my closet to store these items. A cookie sheet is a must, and a cake pan comes in handy for baking birthday cakes for friends. Of course, a medium to large pot is a necessity for pasta. A spatula is great to have on hand, as well as a couple big wooden spoons. Don't forget the oven mitts!
In terms of bigger appliances many dorms furnish these items in common kitchens on each floor, but the same items are prohibited in individual rooms because they pose a fire hazard. Check the college's individual rules before investing in a microwave or an indoor grill. Chances are you will have a microwave available to you somewhere; and as for the indoor grill, you probably won't have time to be grilling indoors anyway.
When it comes down to it, less is more. Just a few of these gift ideas will go a long way in brightening your college student's life away from those home-cooked meals.
