I remember from my childhood , when mother would always be the first person up in the mornings . She would start the old Fatso wood stove back up , putting kiln in to it . Mom took towels and placed them in front of doors that were not used . Heavy drapes were used to stop the unwanted drafts from windows on the inside .
Today however , the double pane glass windows and extra insulation in the attic have helped house stay comfy year round . Still excessive traffic in and out your house , will allow heat to escape .
If you use your back entrance a lot , like most people do . You can disconnect your dryer hose and place a old pantie hose over the end to catch the lint . This is a good source of heat that is not wasted .
The heat from the dryer is humidified heat and is great at putting moistness back in to the air . You can still use drop cloths in front of your doors less traveled and make sure your weather stripping is in good shape around your door jams .
If you are cooking or baking , after wards leave your oven door slightly ajar . This will allow heat to warm the kitchen and dinning room . Put throws and blankets in the living room , they also help in adding coziness to the living areas .
Brew a pot of coffee or make some hot chocolate to sip on through out the day . Scented candles , as small as they are , allow some heat to radiate through the home . Keep all unused rooms in the house closed off .
The effects of winter can make you cold just looking out the window . Looking at pictures in a magazine of the tropics can often trick your mind in to thinking it is warmer than it is .
Snuggling on the couch with your spouse , generates body heat . So curl up and watch a good movie or read a good book , to pass the time on a cold day .
