I think that eventually paper money will become obsolete altogether, as we have already seen happening with coinage in some countries in the world today. It is the natural progression of any society to change its currency as time progresses and in the not too distant future as technology widens the range of ways we will be able to pay for things, i don't see a need for paper money to continue to be made eventually. Just as goods exchanging gave way to gold, which eventually gave way to coins, and then paper money, i think paper money too will eventually be gradually phased out in favor of a newer and more efficient method of paying for things.
Recent trials in Germany have started into the use of fingerprinting pads as a means of paying without even having to have a card, and with this and the upcoming usage of retina scanning as methods of payment, fewer and fewer people will eventually use paper money. I don't think people will actually want to see an end to paper money, however i think many world governments will eventually implement the stoppage of production of paper money because of the fact that it would help with all manner of things such as illegal immigrants and things being sold without tax being paid. This of course would be impossible if every payment had to be made electronically in some way, as there would always be a record of the transaction and the amount involved.
As it is now there are more and more electronic devices being installed all over the country to force us to use our cards more and to use cash less. The main benefit to the finance industry and the government being that every time a card is used they make money, and from the governments point of view it is easier to track peoples movements and spending habits if you have access to a record of everything they buy and where they buy it. As well as this of course things like tax evasion and organized crime and drug dealing will become a lot more difficult as an official record is always kept. The criminals will always find way to adapt of course, although this will make it a lot harder.
The governments tell us that using cards rather then money is more secure as well, although i tend not to believe this myself, as i have never been robbed either way. With the increase of identity thefts etc however i certainly feel more secure buying something in a store with money and no paper trail than by using a method such as a card that can cause me to be robbed and if so can cost me all the money i have in the world, rather then just what i had on me at the time as with a street robbery.
