Defending privacy of personal information on the Internet

by Pittan

The Internet like all other human inventions is both a blessing and a curse. It all depends on the user. If one is using it for good intentions then it becomes a blessing and vice-versa. One area that the Internet has cast doubts and fear in many users is the privacy of personal information.

Most websites require visitors or members to give away some personal information before they can subscribe to the website. In order to make the subscribers feel secure, websites normally include a Privacy Policy. This would generally inform subscribers how the information they give would be used or not used.

I am however, not fully convinced that this method actually ensures personal information from being given out to third parties. This is one gray area of the Internet that needs further development. A more stringent and rigorous method must be devised to protect personal information from falling into the wrong hands. I also think website owners should be made more responsible for the information they collect from Internet users. Webmasters must only collect basic and the barest amount of information from their members. They must be made to register with an official body that will over see their activities if any personal information is collected from members.

It is equally important for internet users to be aware of the risk of giving out personal information. There should be guidelines to help internet users to be more careful and vigilant in disclosing personal inforation on the web.
