Most people, especially Christians, like the gift of time. Invite them over for special meal that you have prepared, ask them to join you for an evening out at a nice restaurant, meet them for coffee or even drinks (some Christians do drink alcohol). The Bible's #1 commandment is to "Love God with all your heart and all your soul, and love your neighbor as yourself." Showing someone that you want to spend time with him is the greatest illustration of love.
Even though a material gift can have a thoughtful meaning behind it, I sometimes wonder if people just buy for the sake of buying. It's as if there is a hidden message, "Here, I thought of you, I went shopping and spent money on the perfect gift. This shows how much I love you. Yet, the gift seems empty when you ask for some time and the response is, "We will get together later." Christians are very familiar with sacrificial giving. Christ sacrificed his life so that we could live. The greatest gift did not come in a box with a pretty red box.
The relationships that we have with each other and with God are the reason for our existence. Money does not last, careers fade, health declines, but love remains. Time is something that we all value, and by giving a few extra hours out of your busy schedule shows the individual that they are valuable to you.
Give the gift of time because you never know how much time you have left and later may never come.
