The answer to this question really depends on what kind of a security system you have and where your house is located. It also depends on what kind of a dog you have and where the dog is at the time of the burglary. If your house is way out in the country built back in a bunch of trees a security system is really pretty useless except maybe in the most amateurish of burglars cases. A security system is fairly easy to disable for an experienced burglar where as with a dog, by the time the burglar realizes a dog is around. it is too late.
You see articles in the papers all the time about these movie stars houses being burglarized and they probably have some of the best security systems. You also see stories about burglars being held hostage by the family dog. Right now I have a Golden Retriever and an Akita and I feel pretty safe leaving them in the yard, that nobody will get in my house. we have a motion detector security system too but if I had to do without one or the other, it would be the security system. Sasha and Saki are very friendly with people they know and are friendly with people we OK but I don't think I would want to try to get in our house when we are not home. The Akita particularly would be aggressive. They are not trained guard dogs in any sense of the word but they definitely know who loves them and gives them food and water and takes them for walks in the park.
I can't speak for a burglar as I have never been one but I think that a 100 pound pit bull or rotteweiler would scare me a lot more than a siren or flashing lights. If you are experienced you could do the job and be gone before the cops ever got to most places.
An experienced burglar would probably have the basic tools needed to disable most security systems. A dog or two are a lot harder to disable before they do some damage, especially if the dogs are trained.
Like I said, we have a motion sensor security system because we have some antique horse drawn equipment in our backyard. One night a drunk somehow got in the backyard from the alley and triggered the light and those dogs were on him like gravy on biscuits. they didn't hurt him but he sobered up pretty fast and was looking for a way out as fast as he could.
Even if your security system is hooked directly to the police network it takes a few minutes for a police car to get to the scene and a lot of times the burglar is long gone by that time.
We had some very good friends that lived out in the woods
