Every year it's the same old thing. Another lame attempt at a New Year's resolution that goes nowhere fast. Of course, that never stops us from trying and failing time and time again. But that's no reason to give up. When January rolls around you can be ready to tackle that challenge and win. Making a significant and meaningful change in your life doesn't have to be impossible and you should never have to feel like it is. It's all in your approach.
When it comes to New Year's resolutions, most of us fail right from the start. This is often because we want to see results immediately and are discouraged when that doesn't happen. The first step in managing your resolution goals is to ensure that they are actually attainable. It is going to be nothing but a disappointment if you decide you're going to do something big like lose fifty pounds or quit smoking but fail to detail your plan any further. Rather than simply stating what it is you resolve to change, make it a big deal. Plot it out step by step if need be and allow it to become a priority in your daily routine. Create a structure that fits your lifestyle and personality because what works for one person may not work for another. It's also very important to be realistic in your expectations. An unrealistic goal is the culprit of broken resolutions. Start off by breaking a long term goal into smaller increments. You'll feel like you're actually achieving something and your mountain to climb won't seem so large.
Know your limits. There is nothing worse than going after something with such intensity that you end up hurting yourself more than your helping. Especially when it's a case of health issues or concerns. Always speak to a professional before beginning any strenuous program or undertaking a major life change. If you need to lose a great deal of weight or have some other pressing health concern, don't hesitate to see your doctor before making significant lifestyle changes. It's astounding how many people actually cause harm when attempting something that is supposed to be good for you. Determination is essential but being plain stubborn could result in injury.
Another common problem when it comes to keeping resolutions is that it's easy to start strong and then fizzle out. If this is something you can relate to, try keeping a log or journal of some kind to record your journey. This can be extremely beneficial if you keep an online blog to mark your progress. Using the internet can help you to get in touch with other people making the same brave attempt at a positive change. A support system can make all the difference when it comes to success. Not only that but it's a great way to meet a partner or team mate. When it comes to things like hitting the gym for a workout, it's always better with someone else. Holding each other accountable and being a force of motivation will help prevent the urge to quit on those lazy days.
Reward yourself for your achievements and you may find you get a lot more accomplished. Whether it's a new outfit or a treat you've been avoiding, it's ok to indulge in celebration of your personal victories. Not only do you deserve it but you may find that those things are so much more enjoyable when truly earned. The bonus is that its guilt free! We all have our reasons for the New Year's resolutions that we choose. It's certainly not as simple as waking up on New Year's day a changed person, no matter what your resolution is. But that's no reason to let poor past attempts keep you from trying again. Turning over a new leaf is something that can be done at any time, so why wait? It isn't too late to get on the path to better living.
