On the 31st of December, my wife and I will celebrate the third anniversary of our Dedication Ceremony. So, the Christmas season holds a special meaning to us. Before becoming Wiccan, we were Christians, Presbyterian to be exact. Maybe, you are wondering why we would pick a time of year that could stir emotional conflict between our old and new faith? First, we chose this day in December for a special reason. You see, it is our wedding anniversary. Second, before dedicating our lives to Wicca, we chose to continue some festivities that bring warmth and good cheer into our home during Christmas. The holiday season has always been more to us than just paying homage to the birth of Jesus Christ. We still put up a Christmas tree in our front porch. We still send out greeting cards. We still exchange gifts. We still gather around the television and watch the classic and new Christmas shows. In fact, my wife still sings in a Christmas concert put on by our former church choir. She is still moved by the music they sing.
At it's root, being a Witch means acknowledging and accepting personal differences. If there is anytime of the year where the Wiccan Creed mirrors Christianity, it is during Christmas. Christians believe the coming of Jesus was to bring a savior that would teach all of us to be more tolerate of each other, to reach out with no strings attached or personal agenda, and to set aside differences for a greater good for all. Sound familiar? As Wiccans, we too believe in honoring differences and, with the support of whatever deities we choose to believe in, do what we can to make it a better world to live in for all of us (do no harm, do what you will).
As non-Christians, our family believes there is still a warmth that can be enjoyed and shared in this holiday season. Setting aside religion, we look to what we feel is the oldest magic, the magic of compassion that comes from the heart. We would never concede our new faith, not even for this brief season. But, we can honor the "golden rule" of the Wiccan faith and still be filled with "spirit" of Christmas.
Seasons Greetings!
