Competition all to commonly becomes harmful to young people. It is especially harmful when overzealous parents become involved. People are always focusing on trying to be better then the next person. With young adults its easy to not appreciate what they are doing, and merely be concerned with winning. So what are they learning from the competition? Nothing. Parents tend to push their children beyond their limits during competitions to prove they are the better parent with the better child.
In many cases adults or parents become to actively involved with competitions and elevate them to an unhealthy level. parents can even become out of control at sports events or any competition involving their child. Parents drive their children to be the best in competitions. At times a yound adult can feel trapped. They can become depressed when they cannot perform to their parents expectations. Teachers and coaches can also take competition to extreme levels. Young adults are very impressionable and can find competition away of proving their selves to those around them.
Competition among young people hurt them by setting boundaries between team work and self accomplishment. Instead of working in groups they only set out to win for themselves or to receive praise. In the end competitions are more harmful to young people then they are beneficial.
