I have lived in many places in the world over the years, but I still come back to my own home city of London. To me it is the most exciting, vibrant interesting city in the world, I love it and I cannot imagine living anywhere else. So if you ask me why I like living in the place I live now, it would be hard to find one reason, as there are so many, but I will try and explain just why this wonderful place means so much to me.
Tha late Noel Coward once wrote a song, entitled "London Pride". The first four lines were as follows, and to me they sum up my feelings for my home city better than anything I could ever say myself:-
"London Pride has been handed down to us.
London Pride is a flower that's free.
London Pride means our own dear town to us,
And our pride it for ever will be."
Thousands of years old, crammed full of history on every corner or every street. My city talks to me of times gone by - the Norman Conquests of 1066, the Dark Middle Ages, the rumbustious courts of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, the Civil War, the Great Fire, the Great Plague, executions on Tower Hill, Traitors' Gate - all momentous places and events that we are taught in school, but which we can be part of by just walking along our streets.
It is more than just history though. Take a stroll through the West End Theatre Land. Maybe not so glitsy as Broadway, and maybe with less money, but it has infinitely more class in my opinion. And when you walk into one of those beautiful old theatres, look around you, and know that Kings and Queens of hundreds of years before sat in those boxes and watched that same stage, it is really something special. From the old Musical Comedy and Vaudeville of the early days, to the musicals of Lloyd Webber today, there is something special about the West End.
And then there are our shops. Oxford Street and Regent Street, Carnaby Street and Kings Road, Harrods in Knightsbridge - all are world-renowned. Back in the 60's London was the place to be for shoppers, and also models, photographers, and anyone in the fashion industry, with the advent of the Beatles, the fashions of Mary Quant, and the so-called Swinging Sixties. The fashions may have changed, but the excitement still remains. We are on the cutting edge of fashion and youth culture despite our city's age and traditions.
So why else do I love living in the place I live now? Well, there is out great transport system on the underground trains and buses. There is the fact that
