I have had both a Dog and a Cat for pets in my lifetime. It is my opinion and personal experience that a Dog definitely makes the superior pet, here is why:
Pros for Dogs:
Dog is mans best friend. They didn't just come up with this "catch phrase" as a marketing tactic. Dogs are truly loyal and kind to man. Their whole existence is to befriend man and be a guide and protector, friend and companion.
Dogs are loyal. I have never met a dog who did not wait by the door eagerly awaiting the arrival of it's master from an outing, or who didn't greet them with sloppy kisses.
Dogs are intelligent. Yes, you can actually teach an old dog new tricks.
Dogs do not pee and poop in a box. Yes, we do need to pick up the poop, but that is why man invented the pooper scooper.
Dogs do not use their claws as a defense mechanism, nor do they hiss at you, or arch their backs and make themselves look like some rabid creature out to get you. I have had expensive furniture and carpet ruined due to clawing, and I've been backed into corners by hissing cats with their dander up.
Cons for Dogs:
You can't just leave their food and water in one of those contraptions and go off for a weekend, No, with a dog you actually have to take care of your pet and be responsible for its health and well being.
You have to pick up doggie doo- but is this a con? What's worse, doggie doo that is outside the house or stinky cat box that is inside the house?
This is what is wrong with Cats:
Cats are arrogant. They walk around with an "I'm better than you attitude". A cat is not a companion, it is more like a mouse that scurries away when someone comes into the room.
Cats have litter boxes which stink if not properly cleaned daily.
If a Cat pee's on anything you own, you can pretty much kiss it good by as everyone knows that Cat pee smell just doesn't come out.
Cats have claws. Cats are not safe for pregnant women. Cats pose a danger to babies.
A cat will not greet you at the door after a long day, nor will it kiss you with it's sandpaper tongue- but would you want it too?
Need I go on? I think I have made my point.
