Why military intervention in Darfur, Sudan would be a more noble cause than the Iraq War

In writing this article it was obvious that to answer the question why Darfur, Sudan would be a more noble cause than the Iraq War one would have to first overcome argument of Iraq having WMD and being a critical node in the fight against terrorism. Also, Iraq becoming yet another democratic Middle East US partner to stop the flow of Iranian influence across the Middle East.

Within the context of peace and stability Darfur requires greater support. With Iraq sitting between Sunni nations and Iran, Iraq would likely receive great support as a counter to any perceived Iranian threat to the region. Besides what greater way for the United States to begin re-strengthening its relationships with the Arab world than to lessen our presence and direct influence in the region. Of course this is not to imply that we are not available at a time when we are asked by Arab nations to assist through diplomatic and joint military type initiatives, just that Sudan should have priority. Sudan is not even able to gain solidarity within the borders of its own nation.

According to a 2006 Department of State and USAID performance progress report, Joint Performance Section, there are several targets that have not been met in bring peace to Sudan (http://www.state.gov/document s/organization/75835.pdf). The original target for Sudan was to bring about regional elections with a non-violent transition of government based on these elections, more equal distribution of country wealth between the North and South regions of the Sudan. A return of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) and finally, disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) of both sides in fighting forces. Although the Sudan Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and the Darfur Peace Agreement and Eastern Sudan Peace Agreement have been completed, overall there still has little forward movement in achieving peace within the areas that count most. The plans for elections are "barely in [the] preliminary phase". Transformation in the South for military transformation with the US support has slowly just begun. With regards to DDR, although IDP are returning to the South, displacements are increasing in Darfur. Even with peace agreements in place violence continues. "Non-signatories to the Darfur Peace Agreement as well as the Sudanese Government continue to escalate violence and further embroil the Darfur region in conflict." (http://www.state.gov/document s/organization/75835.pdf).
