Being unequally yoked

Do Not Be Yoked Together With Unbelievers? What does that mean? It means if you take an egg and mix the white with the yoke, you're going to get a scrambled egg. I have a few friends who are unbelievers and some of them actually scoff at anything to do with Faith in Christ. So does unequally yoked mean that I should stop loving these friends? Does it mean I should not associate with them? No, not at all! It means that I should not allow myself to fall into their ways and walk on the same roads of deception they are walking on.

Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? (2 Corinthians 6:14 NIV)

We should never avoid unbelievers or those of a different faith because that is behaving in great error. Even Jesus ate with tax collectors and sinners in the hopes He could be an example to them. How could Jesus talk sense into the unbelievers of his day if he rejected them or behaved with a "holier than thou attitude?" Because Jesus did associate with them He was able to convert many of them and they were saved.

What does it mean to leave a family member, such as a brother, sister, mother, or father for the sake of Christ? It means do not undermine your own beliefs to get involved in something that is against the moral standards of Christ. For an example, if a sister, brother, or friend wants you to drink and party with them do not do it just because they are a family member or a friend. Stick to your beliefs and continue being a good example, walking on the roads with Christ.

How will you know the difference? Unbelievers live their life with no faith; therefore they trust in the world more than in God. What we trust in becomes our God. Unbelievers walk the moral standards of the world, while a Christ One walks the walk of Jesus Christ.

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists(Hebrews 11:6 NIV)

We should never undermine our own faith and beliefs just to be like everyone else. We should never reject Jesus because we are afraid of getting laughed at, scoffed, or persecuted. All believers if they are following Christ will receive some form of persecution. We ought to set it in our minds that this is "the way" it is supposed to be for Christ followers. We ought to be prepared and ready to deal with it properly so we may remain faithful to our beliefs.

If we are not hated for being a Christ follower, or if we have never been persecuted or scoffed at, or ridiculed maybe we have let ourselves become a scrambled egg?

"I tell you the truth," Jesus said to them, "no one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God will fail to receive many times as much in this age and, in the age to come, eternal life." (Luke 18:29 NIV)

So what can you do when members of your own family or friends scoff at your beliefs, persecute you and slander you for your Faith in Christ? Love them.

But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back then your reward will be great(Luke 6:35 NIV)

Do not say, "I will pay you back for this wrong!"
Wait for the Lord and he will deliver you. (Proverbs 20:22 NIV)
