College students have many different needs, wants, and desires especially around the holidays. The hopeful students look forward to traditional gifts from family members that compliment their educational journey. For example computers, i-Pods, Blackberry, dorm size refrigerators, and fast food or coffee house gift cards.

Then out of the blue comes a gift of good health ! Yikes, good health ? A student might ask "don't you think I have enough to worry about already?" or "I am young and healthy who needs it?" As a reader you can imagine a young college student's reaction to such a gift.

Although good healthy habits may start at home, when our children go off to college often they are left at home. So, let's build a basket promoting healthy habits and perhaps some symptom remedies should they fall under the weather.

(1) Medium Basket (preferably matching their dorm or apartment decor)

(1) Large bottle of daily essential vitamins(include a gift card for a nutrition outlet)

(1) Recommended Electric Tooth Brush (include extra batteries and 3 new heads)

(2) Tubes of total care tooth paste (mix it up with new available flavors)

(6) Travel Size Packs of Mouthwash / whitening strips

(1) Tin of Green Tea Bags (provide electric tea pot and personalized mug too)

(6) Travel Size Bottles of Hand Sanitizer

(1) Gift Certificate for a hip sport attire shop (encourage exercise)

(1) Bottle of non aspirin pain reliever (extra strength)

(1) Pack of zinc strips or their preferred symptom relief brand for flu and colds

(1) Small jar of Vapor Rub

(2) Cans of Chicken Noodle Soup (provide a sentimental microwavable soup bowl)

Last but not least add some chocolate to the basket (the darker the better). Arrange the items securely, personalize it, and shrink wrap it. Don't be afraid to add more to it or diversify from the above suggestions. Be proactive in giving him or her the edge needed to finish on top and in good health.

It may seem like a "thankless" gift this year. You can mark my words one day he or she will thank you in the long run. The "long run" is what always matters the most.
