The pay for being mom doesn't come in monetary value but in hugs and chocolate lip covered kisses after making brownies. It comes in the form of bedtime stories and endless squeals of laughter as you are in the midst of a tickle fest. It seems the moments when your children are young are fleeting and you find yourself hurled it feels almost overnight into the strange and yet charming stage of teenagers.
It can be one of the most demanding and exhausting jobs performed but it is not for the light hearted who go in thinking that motherhood is easier than it sounds. Endless nights at first of a baby desiring nourishment and comfort grows into a preteen standing in front of you with eyes rolled back and hands on her hips, " I know mother".
Defining oneself outside of motherhood can be one of the most challenging jobs a woman can do. Whether you work full-time outside or inside the home, learning to acknowledge and respect yourself as a woman first and then a mother can seem almost impossible. Remembering to do little things that once use to come so naturally you now find yourself putting yellow sticky notes on bathroom mirrors or refrigerators to remind yourself to do them.
There are times you find yourself wanting to scream " I am mother (hear me roar)" to anyone who will listen because you feel the need to acknowledged that yes, you are mom and your a credit to your profession of motherhood. Then there are those moments where you wish you were on some quiet beach sipping a Margarita and the only name anyone knows you by is Senorita.
Finding the balance of motherhood and who you are as a woman can at times seem impossible but it can be done. It takes courage to keep boundaries and inspiration to keep going when you feel you can't go any further.
Yes, I am a mother but there is more to me than meets the eye. I am a woman who enjoys long walks on the beach, sunsets and a good Dr.Seuss book at bedtime.
