Getting your kids to do their chores

Getting children to do chores is as easy as getting them to do homework, brush their teeth or comb their hair. The best way to start teaching children to do chores is to lead by example while they are young! How can you expect your child to make their bed in the morning if you don't make your own? Children watch everything we do as parents from a very early age! As they get a little older, you can allow them to "help you". When my daughter was 5 years old, she used to want to help me with the laundry. So, to let her "help" me, I would hand her the clothes from the washing machine, so that she could put them in the dryer.

Now that my children are older I went to the local teaching supply store and bought reward charts that we wrote daily chores on. They complete their tasks with foil stars. Each day the children are responsible for putting stars on the chores that they have completed and then every two weeks they are paid their allowance according to how many stars they have. This is a very important part because it is also teaching reward for working. It has worked very well for our family and inspires them to compete healthily with each other to see who will get the most stars and in turn the most allowance!
