I truly believe that employers should require employees to speak English. For example, this past summer I was in an accident and broke my ankle. I was in the hospital for a week and had a nurse that could hardly speak English. It was very difficult to talk to her when I needed help going to the restroom or anything else. The day after my surgery the doctor raised up the end of the bed to wear it was above my heart (about a 45 degree angle) to reduce the swelling and pain. Later on that day, I needed to go to the restroom and needed the nurse to lower the bed back down. She came beside me and started pushing the buttons that move the mattress up and down. I was tell her that the doctor lifted the bed up and she need to lift it to put it back down. She was dealing with the bed for a few minutes until I had to start raising my voice at her. I started using hand motions while I was talking to get her to understand. Finally, I was able to get out of the bed after being in more pain from motion that was caused from her not being able to communicate and fix the situation properly. I did not ask her or any other nurse to lift the end of the mattress back up. This situation might not happen to everyone but it does happen. Employers need to hire people that know how to communicate with others if they are going to be working with people. Communication is essential in the workplace. Its okay if English is not your major language. Just know how to speak it well, not just enough to get by. I know a second language but not enough to get a job in speaking it throughly. To all the employers out there, what are you thinking? Employees need to speak English especially when working with other people. I hope nobody has to go through what I did.
