Celebrity scents: Perfumes made popular by sweet-smelling stars

Are you starting to feel like celebrity fragrances are popping up everywhere? Don't worry, you're not being paranoid, they are! According to market researcher NPD Group data, celebrity perfumes are the fastest rising market in the perfume industry.

Celebrity endorsed fragrances, especially those for women, have been around a long time. Audrey Hepburn was one of the token firsts in the endorsement category, starting in 1958 when she became the face for "L'Interdit", a Givenchy scent she had inspired .

This helped launch the genre of celebrity endorsed aromas and soon it was very fashionable to wear the same scent as your favorite star.

But it has been since 1991, when Elizabeth Taylor took endorsement a step further and released her epic "White Diamonds" perfume that all sorts of stars have been scrambling to get into the market. Taylor herself tried to release follow up aromas like "Sapphires" and "Emeralds" to repeat this success, though they have never reached quite the same height as the original.

These days it's difficult to find aromas your favorite stars are wearing that aren't, literally, their own. But the fact remains that the popularity and shelf lives of most celebrity perfumes today are rather short, coming in with a bang and going out with a sigh. That hasn't stopped the rich and famous from trying though, and in some cases succeeding beautifully.

Glow from J. Lo (Jennifer Lopez) , released in 2002, is another landmark success story. The light and flowery fragrance added a big new boost to the number of celebrities releasing perfumes. J. Lo capitalized on this, like Taylor, and has created many spin off scents, like "Miami Glow" and "Love At First Glow".

But truly anyone can have a foot in this part of the beauty market. Michael Jordan, the former NBA star, has "Michael Jordan". Socialite Paris Hilton has "Paris Hilton". "Supermodel Naomi Campbell has "Naomi Campbell". Top tennis star Maria Sharapova has "Maria Sharapova". There's even "Carlos Santana" from rock and roller legend Carlos Santana! There may be a trend here.

As a matter of fact, Antonio Banderas, David Beckham, Celine Dion, Hilary Duff, Enrique Iglesias, Stella McCartney, and Kate Moss all have their own fragrances, with some also offering matching lotions, bubble baths, and other cosmetics items. Even celebrities you might not expect are getting on the bandwagon with scents from Donald Trump, Paula Abdul, Prince, Danielle Steel, and Marilyn Manson. Celebrity
