Music Business

What to consider before entering the music biz

There are a number of factors that must be considered before entering directly into the music business. First of all, by choosing the music business you are choosing an extremely competetive industry to be a part of. It is true that the biggest industries like music and adult entertainment make the most money and there is a lot of potential to earn there. People also generally fail to realize the vast range of opportunities and jobs available within the industry. Not only do we need singers, songrwriter, performers and recording artists but we also need radio dj's, journalists, producers, promoters, agents and sound engineers. In fact, the list is endless.

No matter what you choose to do in the music business, the most important side of things is the legal aspects that you need to take into consideration. For example, if you wanted to start a record label and have artists signed to it then you need to make sure that you have legal contracts for them to sign that are completely legitimate and would stand up in court, if necessary. You must also take copyright issues into consideration to stop unauthorized exploitation of your company's work. The best way is to get financial advice which can be attained from specialist financial advisors and music lawyers that specialize in the music business.
If you are a musician who writes your own songs and you want to market them, then the first step is to make sure your work is copyrighted. If you're going to be doing this commercially then it's essential that you become a member of MCPS-PRS Alliance so that they can collect royalties on your behalf. You must also be aware of the different copyrights that exist within a sound recording. Usually, the performance rights on an album are own by all the people that have performed on the album and the mechanical copyright is owned by the record label that produced and released the album. These rights can also be bought and sold or licensed to advertisers, etc.
The way that most artists make any substantial amount of income from the music business are generally in two ways. The first is performing. If you don't perform live then you're not going to make any real money, as this is where the potential lies. Even unsigned bands can get paid gigs and if they are popular they can make a large amount of money from doing so and they can then also sell merchandise at their gigs and hand out promotional flyers for upcoming events. The other way of making money, which is an attractive top-up job for thousands of musicians, is teaching their wares. I actually teach guitar lessons myself and it is reasonable to charge anything from 5 up to 15 per lesson. If you are just starting out in the music business, then I would recommend that you at least have a secure part time job so that you are guaranteed a minimum amount of income.
There are also a lot of music websites out there that can help promote your music business, no matter what it is that you are doing. I recommend spending the time researching your market in every way possible. The music business is a large, extremely competetive and often corrupt industry to become a part of. Where the music business is concerned I think the best piece of advice that I can give is this: Know your enemy.
