Christmas 2007: Gift ideas for college freshmen

Obviously, if your son or daughter is away at college, money (for you and them) may be tight. For this reason, gift vouchers or just plain cash can be a good idea. Obviously, this isn't the most exciting of presents. Gift vouchers for clothing shops might be a good idea, especially for girls. When I am short on money, I hate not being able to buy new clothes, which are important. the influx of new clothes I purchased with christmas gift vouchers would certainly lift my spirits.

Most teenagers now have an MP3 player, usually an Ipod but perhaps a Creative or other brand. If they don't already have one, this would always make a good present. Another thing to consider is an MP3 player dock. These are one of the most popular gifts this christmas and would certainly suit a college freshmen. These are speakers that play music from the MP3 player. They collect to the mains and the MP3 player sits in the top. The music from the MP3 then players from the speakers.

Before buying one of these, check which MP3 player it is for as different docks hold different models/brands of player. Many docks are highly portable, such as the Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere (for Ipod), which is available for 99 in the UK, or the Creative Travel Sound. This will make it easy to trasport between college and home.

The main difference between different docks is the sound quality. In the UK, prices for docks range between 20 and 250. The cheapest speakers are generic brand and usually have a lower sound quality (think a cheaper radio). As the price goes up, so does the quality. For 200 (or $399), you can get a Bose Sounddock Portable. This gives amazing soundquality, like an expensive stereo. For a college freshman who is very into music, this is the gift to go for this christmas.
