Do-it-yourself Christmas tree ornaments are lots of fun and many people prefer them to typical "store bought" decorations. Homemade ornaments not only express imagination , they hold great sentimental value, and are usually cheap to make. If they get damaged or lost, they are also easy to replace with another fun session of creativity.
There are literally tons of different ornaments that can be made, with the only restriction being the skill of the creator. Some wonderful ideas for all levels are:
- EASY -
1. Paper Snowflakes.
- Take piece of thick paper and fold it in half, two times. Make large, multi shaped cuts in the unfolded edges of the paper, creating the snowflake shape. Then cut small shapes into the rest of the paper, creating the inner pattern. Unfold and hang with string.
2. Paper Gingerbread Person Ornaments.
- Cut out the shape of a medium sized gingerbread person from cardboard or thick, heavy paper. Use paint, crayons, or whatever, to create a gingerbread man or woman. Use regular glue and buttons, beads, yarn or such to help create decoration. Punch small hole in head and hang with string.
3. Simple Angel Ornaments.
- Take old fashion wooden clothespin and use markers or paint to draw two little eyes and a mouth. Fold a paper doily in half and slip between clothespin legs. Instant wings. Using regular or hot, glue a little gold tinsel, string, wire, or whatever to the head as a halo. Tie string to wings or halo and hang.
4. Mini-Gifts Ornaments.
- Take a small box (like the ones mini candy or raisins use), and wrap it like a gift! Use wrapping paper, fancy paper, or even fabric scraps. Add extras like tiny bows, or ribbons, or even a fake card. Tie ribbon with string and hang.
- SLIGHTLY COMPLICATED -
1. Painted Wood Ornaments.
- Every craft store is filled with these cheap and simple wood ornaments. They come in every style you could want. With just a little paint, or even markers, you can personalize your own snowman, sleigh, or bow decoration.
- If you want to get fancy you can add glitter, pom-pons, googly eyes, or beads too. Spray or paint with a light coat of clear varnish. Tie with string and hang.
2. Foam Ornaments.
- Craft stores are filled with plenty of these too, inexpensive ornament-shaped foam balls. Just buy some of your favorite shapes and glue on ribbon, fabric, wrapping paper, or foil to cover the foam. Make sure the covering is a snug fit.
