Essential classic Christmas family movies

by Mary Bubbins

Christmas brings about a whole array of special memories for all of us, differing in their own spectacular ways. That is the great magic of this season; it creates for every one of us something extraordinary to look back on, something that makes us long to share with our own children. I know that when Thanksgiving ended, it was time to watch the TV Guide intensely for all of the Christmas specials that would soon be coming. This would be a time for my mother and I to share together at night, just her and me, as our Christmas spirit would undoubtedly be ignited by the kindness, love and compassion displayed in these films. And these values, my friends, are what Christmas is all about.

Of course there are the timeless classics that we all have known and loved since were children and certainly that existed before our existence. Movies like "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer." How Precious is this film? For any of us who have ever felt the pain of rejection from our peers or were different in some way which lowered our own self esteem, we may have looked forward to this film the most and loved Rudolph the best. His heart was golden and all he wanted was to be the best new reindeer at the reindeer tryouts so that he could make his parents proud and impress Santa, but he had one hangup and that was his shiny red nose. Instead of being admired for having something that none of the other reindeer's had, he was scoffed at, even though his ability to fly surpassed all others! What a terrific lesson to teach our children about kindness to others, although they may be different from you. Of course, it ends on a happy note, when every one realizes that he isn't a misfit and that he can be of great use to Santa's team. But what I love the most is that it shows everyone who mistreated him trying to make it right by apologizing. The one thing in life that people have the hardest time doing is admitting they were wrong and this is also a wonderful lesson for children and adults alike. Please do not misunderstand my article; although I love to take as many life lessons as possible from all that is around me, I also truly enjoy this film just for the animation, the Christmas music and the childhood memories that it brings back for me. As adults we tend to lose our "inner child" and it's so very important to recapture this so that we can be better parents to our own children. Sharing these moments with our kids, and sharing our memories of when we used to watch the with "Grandma" helps
