Sewing space: Tips for designing a sewing center

Depending on how much space you have, this is a great idea for a sewing center and also storage.

I don't know about you, but a layout table has always been my biggest problem, when it came to sewing, I always ended up on the kitchen table, bent over, as I find the table to low.

For my sewing center, I created a table that is at counter height, but you can adjust it. Purchase a portable table with adjustable legs, or at your local hardware store, you can by saw horse legs for a work table, that can be adjusted in height. You would then have to purchase a smooth door or piece of wood for the top.

I like the idea of the portable table, as it has a hard plastic top, which was great for the fabric, and very affordable. I then glued some velcro tape along the entire edge of the table.

I created some "curtains" for the table by measuring the height and yards of fabric I would need, and purchased some fabric (try to get a sale on this, as you may need a lot of yards!) and I made a hem for the top and bottom and sewed the other part of the velcro strip to the fabric.

Now press your fabric on around the table using the velcro, and then you have instant storage under the table for bins of fabric, notions etc, and they are hidden from sight. This gives your sewing center a nice clean look, and everything is stored underneath.

The layout table was the most important part for me, this stopped me from spreading my sewing projects around the house, and keeping them in one spot in my basement sewing room.
