How to make Christmas ornaments from pinecones

Pine cones were always a persistent problem where I grew up. Maine is sometimes known as the "Pine Tree State", and there were certainly plenty of them littering the yard each year. So, we figured why not put them to good use and make Christmas ornaments out of them?

Materials you will need include:
paints (non-toxic if your young children will be helping)
glue

glitter
string or yarn
ribbon
pine cones (of course!)

You can start by painting the pine cones in festive colors. Pine cones are essentially made of a woody substance, so they'll hold any wood paint well. You can try a variety of different types, including spray paints if you like. Some of the metallic silver spray paints look especially nice for Christmas.

Once you've painted them, you might want to add glitter to spruce them up even more. There are plenty of different spray-on glue products you can use to create a layer of adhesive on the pine cone, and then you can sprinkle gold or red or silver (or whatever color turns your holiday spirit) glitter onto the surface before the glue dries.

We like to tie a piece of colored yarn to the pine cone once everything is dry, or use a ribbon that is glued to the top of the pine cone. Then we attach a standard metal ornament hook to the yarn or ribbon so we can suspend it from our tree.

It's a family tradition of ours to make our own ornaments every season, and pine cones are a lovely way to spruce up your spruce tree!
