Divorce today is as common as having a computer in the house. People know that they can get out when things get tough. Many people give up before their marriage even gets started. They think it should be easier. There are very few things in this life that are easy. Why would marriage be any different? So how do you keep a marriage alive? Here are a few tips that may help your marriage along.
Communication is key in any relationship, especially in a marriage. When your communication starts to break down so does the relationship. Make sure you talk about your daily activities, share ideas about life, and talk about issues before they escalate into arguments. Communication requires listening as well. Make sure you have your listening ears on when your spouse is talking. Try to clear up any misconceptions early on.
Money seems to be a topic of discussion with all married couples. Money should be handled before you walk down the aisle. Clear rules on the financial aspect of the marriage should be spelled out early on in the relationship. It should be determined if you are going to have a joint account or separate accounts. You should discuss who is going to pay the bills. Also, you should decide on a spending limit that can be reached before consulting your spouse. This way you can side step arguments about who controls the money.
Creating time together is crucial. It is very easy to loose each other in the hustle and bustle of every day life. Having a date night can keep you interested in each other, especially after children come into the picture. Time together does not have to be extravagant. It could be as simple as ordering take out, cuddling under a blanket, and watching a movie. This little gesture can keep your spouse from slipping away.
Arguments are going to happen. Things are going to get hairy. During the argument it is important to keep a level head. Casting blame only causes more difficulties. It is important to deal with the issue at hand and not drudge up past indiscretions. Think about what is bothering you and make sure you stick to that one issue. It may help to write down what you want to discuss before hand. This may not be possible all the time but could help resolve the issue before it escalates. If the conversation becomes heated, take a time out. Go for a walk or leave the room until you are calm. When you collect yourself, return to the discussion. Remember to be considerate of your partner's feelings and stay calm.
These are only a few tips on how to keep a marriage going. Try to remember that marriage is not about molding your spouse into what you think they should be, or molding yourself into what they think you should be. It's about two people joining their lives. It's not an easy process but with a little work you can live happily ever after. Well, at least you'll have strong and stable marriage that can withstand any storm.
