Legendary college football teams: The Oklahoma Sooners

With the best record (most wins, and best winning percentage) in college football since 1936, The University of Oklahoma stands above the rest. Sure one school has one more national championship, but Notre Dame was winning football games when Oklahoma wasn't even a state. As far as the modern era is concerned that other school pales in comparison. Oklahoma has been the best in football since 1936.

Since 1950 Oklahoma has garnered seven national championships. Two of the coaches are legendary, and the other will be. Bud Wilkenson was the coach as the Sooners won championships in 1950, 1955 and 1956. This includes a record forty-seven consecutive victories which may never be beaten. Once beaten Oklahoma rattled off eighteen more victories before losing again. Under coach Wilkenson Oklahoma also had a thirty-one game victory run. Quite impressive to say the least. Coach Wilkenson record was 145-29-4. A winning percentage of 82.6 per cent. His conference record was 93-9-3. His winning percentage was 90 percent. Wilkenson would not allow his teams to lose.

Barry Switzer coached Oklahoma to national championships in 1974,1975 and 1985. His teams were known as "Barry's Boys." He furthered the Oklahoma winning tradition with a record of 157-29-4, coming out to a winning percentage of 83.7 percent. He had a conference record of 100-11 1, an 89.7 winning percentage. His teams were ferocious, and coach Switzer was known to put "a half a hundred" on Oklahoma's opponents.

Present day coach Bob Stoops is on his way to join the elite Oklahoma ranks. Under Coach Stoops the Sooners have won a national championship in 2000. Under Stoops Oklahoma has a record of 97-21, a winning percentage of 82 percent. His conference record is 59-12, for an 83 percentage. Stoops looks to be far from finished. Almost every starting Sooner returns next year, watch out! Stoops constantly loses assistant coaches that other schools pick-up as head coaches, but he always finds great new assistants. What coach wouldn't want to be called coach at Oklahoma? If you become an assistant coach at Oklahoma, you stand to become a head coach down the road at another university. Since Stoops took over the program, Oklahoma has a record of 54-3 at home.Do you think other colleges want to play in Norman, Oklahoma?

Here are some of the awards Oklahoma players, and teams have won:
-41 Conference Championships.
-63 National Award Winners.
-4 Heisman Trophy Winners.
-143 All Americans.
-436 First Team All Conference.
-Number i in 10+ Win Seasons.
AND MORE!

At the start of every sporting event they begin with the Star Spangled Banner. There is only one word changed at Oklahoma. The last line of the song is of course; "and the home of the brave." At OU football games they sing; " and the home of the SOONERS!" That's how important football is to an OKLAHOMA SOONER fan.
