Short stories: Unrequited love

to notice that Lyssa was finding excuses to see John and call him at his desk. This seemed rather unusual to Drew for two people who were just supposed to be friends. Drew thought nothing more about it and went about his business.

Lunch was no longer a time of contentment for Drew. John and Lyssa would make plans with each other in front of him and talk about what they did while they were out. Drew showed interest despite his bemusement thinking that a night out with his new friends would be fun and a terrific chance to learn more about Lyssa. An invitation never came and Drew's attempts to invite them to go places went unanswered.

Sitting right next to John the heartbroken Drew could hear Lyssa calling John almost every day now. Meeting one another for lunch and making weekend plans. A large part of Drew wanted very much to be happy for his friends. Love and friendship are commodities in such short supply in these cynical times. However, much of what Drew thought tormented him while tearing his heart into infinite pieces. So long he had worked for a good job and now he was destined to watch as his best friends pursued their interests in one another. Drew's devastation grew larger everyday as the joy he felt being around John and Lyssa became like poison in his veins.

The only thing he had in his life was his duty to his aging parents. Watching them slip away in the sands of time along with his feelings for Lyssa. Happiness had turned back into tears for Drew. Everything he possessed wanted desperately to tell Lyssa how he felt, but he knew doing so meant risking his friendship with her and John; as well as, endangering his reputation at work.

Then, one night, as Drew's heart pounded with the only rhythm grief knew, he spied a binder covered in dust. He opened it and found that it contained a manuscript that he had started before he was released from his job six months ago. Drew began to read through the manuscript and began to remember the characters that he had created and nurtured with such gentle care. Minutes turned into hours and Drew found himself smiling again. He was lost in the story he had written and was feeling whole once more.

Drew came to the end and found that there was a lot more to be written. The characters that had been with him many days had had their stories cut short, but they were far from over. Drew thought the same was true for him and, so, he dug out a legal pad and started scribbling words breathing new life into his beloved characters.

Drew was smiling again. Not because he was lost in his story but because he had found some peace. There would always be place in him for Lyssa. His feelings had progressed too far for him to undo that. Drew, though, could not let the poison of unrequited love defeat him in other life avenues and certainly if his writing was to possess any purity.

Drew, John and Lyssa are still friends. They still laugh at lunch sharing stories and one another's dreams. At times, Lyssa will look into Drew's eyes and that reserved cloister in his heart will shudder with warmth, but he just smiles and tells her a joke so he can hear that melodic laugh just one more time.
