Short stories: Unrequited love

Six months passed without Drew finding a job. The economy wasn't what it once was and the duty bound job hunter needed to stay in his home town to help his sick and aging parents. Resumes and interviews seemed endless and Drew began to question his worth as a man, as a person and as a son.

The bleakness of winter had passed and the first leaves of spring began to emerge. And, then, hope. Drew got a call from a long standing corporation near his hometown offering him a job. Time had tested Drew but his persistence had finally paid dividends and he accepted the job.

The job was of the entry-level variety and Drew would have to count every penny to pay his bills and save for the future. It was a beginning, though, and that was more than the now employed Drew had six months ago.

Like warmth from a rising sun the first day of work felt liberating. Drew had a real chance at a future and could continue to fulfill his duties to his family. Instead of tears and a heavy heart Drew's days were filled with happiness and contentment.

Days passed slowly as they usually do when learning new skills and knowledge, but Drew felt invigorated to have worth again. And, then, like a subtle breeze a young woman named Lyssa made her presence known. With the beauty of a goddess she launched Drew's heart into a fervor. It had been so long since Drew had felt like this toward anyone. It was a good feeling and humbled him with absoluteness.

Lyssa would stop to see Drew many times after that and he became smitten. Drew knew, however, that he had to keep his head so as to not create conflict at a job for which he had waited so long. His measured constraint, though, was dwarfed by feelings that had started to take root deep within his soul and stretch their branches far beyond any distance Drew had ever encountered.

During quiet times Drew's thoughts would turn to Lyssa. Her alluring eyes, her melodic laugh and the inflection in her voice when she said certain words. The more Drew begged his mind to stop thinking of Lyssa he would lose to the futility of his stubborn heart.

Drew also befriended a fellow co-worker and friend to Lyssa named John. Drew and John had a lot in common and were soon an almost inseparable tandem. Lunch with John and Lyssa was something that Drew cherished very much. Sharing funny stories and laughs with a friend and the woman who held his affections had begun to heal Drew of all the hurt he had felt during the misery of his unemployment.

More time passed and Drew began
