Short stories: Science fiction

END GAME

The last human died thirteen days after a massive nuclear war turned the sky black and made the air itself ring with radiation.

The stars faded and, in a flash, the universe wound down to a null set.

Player One fluttered back into consciousness as his splintered mind coalesced. He sighed and sat upright on his throne. Eyes fluttering open, he was greeted by the smiling face of Player Two across the room.

"Damn."

Player Two stretched his arms and rolled his head in small circles. "Don't sweat it. That was a good run."

Player One rubbed at his throbbing temples. "Yeah, right. That was three unfoldings shorter than the last one."

Player Two laid his arms on the rests of his throne and sat back. "Well, you did have a disadvantage, the virtues are always harder than the sins."

"After the global stages that is very true."

Player Two nodded. "Basic law of averages. Each unfolding gives the groupings an even shot at destruction or transcendence, and each unfolding has a greater possibility with a farther reach."

"And, a more total effect of the destruction."

Player Two regarded the nails of one set of outstretched fingers. "Should we take a bit of a break?"

"No. I want to give it another try, I think I have an angle on a better strategy."

"Want to switch sides?"

Player One shook his head. "No, I think I can win this. Just got to figure out the right sequence."

Player Two smiled. "Alright. But, if I may, the messiah gambit was a bit too subtle that round."

"You may be right. But if you go too strong it leaves less room for self determination. I prefer to keep the splinters a bit more, lively."

"Fair enough." Player Two let his head rest back and closed his eyes. "Good luck."

"Thanks."
