Easy kid crafts projects: Making cake candles

Two Ways to Make Birthday Candles

Baking a cake together is a great way to get a child involved in their birthday party preparations. It's also a fun bonding activity for the both of you, and educational(shhhh... don't let them in on the secret!) Take it one step further by topping the cake with your child's very own homemade candles.

1. Beeswax Candles

What You'll Need:

*Candle wick
*Sheets of beeswax (available at craft of hobby stores)

Directions:
*Cut the wick so it is 1/4" longer than the beeswax sheet.
*Place the wick on one edge, and carefully roll the beeswax sheet over it.
*When the whole sheet is rolled up, gently squeeze it to make the candle stay in shape.

You can roll candles straight to create a chunky round candle, or roll it on a slight diagonal so the candle is thick at the bottom and narrow at the top.

2. Wax Crayon Candles

What You'll Need:
*Wick
*Broken bits of crayons
*Candy molds

Directions:
*Heat crayons over a double boiler until melted.
*Fill candy mold 1/2 full, gently lay the wick into the wax, and fill the rest of the way.
*Set aside to harden.

For safety reasons, this method is not as hands-on as the first, but your child can still get excited and be involved by choosing the molds and colors. Be creative and use two or three different colors in a single candle. Most importantly, have fun!
