Child emergencies: How to work with your employer

Its 4AM and you have been up all night with your little one who is so very sick, and you decide you need to take them to emergency room. Either call your employer then and leave a message if you know someone will get it first thing in the morning or if you have your main supervisors cell call and leave a message. Its always best to make sure someone knows well in advance of showing up at the office that you will not be in.

Another scenario could be its 2:30 in the afternoon and your child's daycare just called and told you, you need to come get them either they are sick or hurt, but you must come now. Don't delay tell your boss right away, wrap up any loose ends for the day and scoot. Most things you will be able to finish up the next day.

Just always keep in mind be prompt in letting your employer know so they can manage to cover for you for the rest of the day.

And if staying out of work for the day or leaving early does not work, call a family member or friend who you have authorized to pick your child up. Or have your spouse take care of it.

Most employers are very understanding of the emergencies that come about with kids, they to either have their own kids or have already raised their own, they have been through all of this. Just always make sure you leave them time to decide how to cover for you for the time that you will be gone.
