When shopping turns into a shopping disorder

People with Compulsive Shopping Disorder (CSD) get that immediate relief from making an exuberant amount of purchases in short periods of time, but usually feel an incredible sense of remorse afterward, thus, plunging them deeper into a state of depression. It is a vicious circle and can be truly hazardous, if it remains untreated.

Compulsive shopping is not, in any way, a positive way to find self-empowerment. It is not an effective way to self medicate either. However, the impulse to go on a shopping binge can be controlled. It is a good idea to seek professional help in more severe cases of shopping disorders, though, to find the underlying sources of problems which produce the impulses to shop and to, subsequently, modify the destructive behavior.

The ultimate first step to resolving a problem is, just like with any other more typical disorder, is to recognize the problem. Once the unhealthy pattern of behavior is singled out, the second step would be to find help and appropriate ways of treatment.

There are several ways to get help, once a person uncovers unhealthy shopping patterns. Recovery groups such as Debtors Anonymous have formed to help compulsive shoppers and spenders return to normal, appropriate patterns of buying. Mental-health professionals do recognize and take seriously the behavior pattern described as compulsive shopping disorder. Most health care professionals don't view compulsive shopping as a unique disorder, but rather as a symptom of a broader, underlying disorder, such as anxiety or depression, for which several medical and behavioral-therapy treatments already exist.

It is important to recognize the problem in its early stages, when it can be treated more easily. Perceiving the problem as "not a big deal" and easily manageable without any outside help is a dangerous route to take and can lead to the worsening of the problem. The best way to go about with a shopping disorder is to treat it like any other substance or food addiction and to get immediate help.
