While I cannot imagine living without an internet access, I am not sure that I would consider giving an internet connection subscription as a gift. The needs of computer users in different areas and situations are often quite unique and this makes it hard for someone to purchase an internet subscription as a gift.

In many ways, I think that an internet connection is a personal decision that the computer owner should make for themselves. For instance a person's location may mean that one service is more appropriate than another. In my particular area we have the choice of using DSL provided by the phone company as well as other options for internet such as dish satellite systems and cable providers. If you are purchasing for a college student, the college may have special deals for students of which you are not aware. Unless you know the specific options available, you might be spending more than necessary and you might not be getting the best service available for that particular situation.

Another consideration is whether the person for whom you are buying actually wants the internet connection. Many people are not dependent on having internet access in their home and may not mind going to the local library or other location to surf the web. Unless you are certain that the recipient actually wants the responsibility of having internet access available in the home, you might want to rethink this particular gift choice.

Another issue in choosing to purchase an internet subscription service is how long you are willing to pay for the service. Will you have the company bill you or will you give the recipient the money to pay for the service? There are many logistical concerns that could become issues with this type of purchase.

All in all, I think that perhaps your money could be spent on something that will be easier for you to purchase and that will be enjoyable for the recipient. Unless you know the person for whom you are shopping very well, there are so many possibilities and variations that exist when it comes to internet subscription services that you would probably have a hard time finding the perfect gift and that is what most of us strive to do when we purchase gifts for our friends and loved ones.
