The most scenic ski resorts in Vermont

Skiing in Vermont is beautiful, but a thousand people standing in front of you can ruin the view. Find the out-of-the-way mountains and resorts, and you'll see Vermont the way it should be seenin all of its unspoiled natural beauty.

It can be frustrating to read brochures for Vermont ski resorts that make them look like your own personal paradise, only to arrive and find out that everyone else from New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts thought the same thing! There are still some hidden treasures to be found though, and they're often much easier on your wallet!

Bromley Mountain is one of Vermont's best kept secrets. Founded in 1936 by Fred Pabst, Jr., heir to the beer fortune, this is the place where ski lifts and trail grooming were first developed. It has kept itself family-oriented when others have not, and it boasts the only south-facing exposure in the state, which creates unrivaled winter views. You won't find a Hard Rock Caf here, and you won't find huge crowds either. What you will find is one of the most beautiful settings in Vermont.

Farther north you'll find Burke Mountain, a true Vermont classic. Renowned for breathtaking views, it's also the home of the Burke Mountain School, which has created 40 Olympic athletes, and lends a unique atmosphere to the resort. Just barely off the beaten track, Burke is justifiably considered one of Vermont's most beautiful mountains, and with lower than average ticket prices, you'll feel on top of the world.

For those willing to start their drive really early, and consider themselves advanced skiers or snowboarders, nothing else in Vermont equals Mad River Glen and Jay Peak. These two hideaways, with some of the most challenging terrain in New England, are also more remote, less developed, and more scenic than anywhere else in the state. From the top of Jay Peak, you can look out over both Lake Memphremagog and the Canadian border, which is only five miles away. There's not much else at Jay or Mad River, but if you're looking for the ultimate view, this is where to find it.
