If you're thinking of buying a boat for Christmas, there are many things that you need to consider. Guys, thinking about buying a fishing boat for your wife? Better think again. Unless it's a large yacht with a chef and a wine steward, make sure that it is a sleep aboard, since you'll probably be sleeping in it until summer.
A boat purchase is a big decision, even if you're buying a small boat. It's best to involve the main fisherman in the decision. This is a case where surprise isn't always a good thing. Maybe you want to give him a card that says, "You have my permission to buy a fishing boat." Whatever the circumstances, there are a few questions you need to answer before you make a purchase.
Where will the boat be used?
Will you be fishing in a lake, river, or ocean? This will help you determine the type of boat you want. You'll need a bigger boat for bigger bodies of water. The deep V-hull is a good choice for open water. A boat used in the oceans or bays should have two reliable engines. Failure of a single engine can quickly lead to disaster. For smaller rivers or lake, you can choose a smaller boat.
Who will be using the boat?
Will the whole family go boating or will the fisherman be alone or with a couple of friends? This will help you determine the size and amenities you need. You never want to exceed the boat's listed capacity. Also, consider the weigh of your gear and personal belongings. If your kids will be with you a lot, you'll want to consider a boat with a head, room for a portable toilet, or a large enough motor to make a dash for an onshore bathroom.
Will fishing be its main purpose?
Is it only for fishing? A raised deck with a low gunwale is good for a boat used only for fishing. Does someone want to water ski? A larger engine is needed to pull a skier than you need for fishing. However, people fishing in tournaments use big engines to get to the fishing grounds quickly.
Where will you store it?
Will you be able to keep it in your garage, your driveway, or will you need a moorage? The smaller the boat the easier it will be to trailer. Do you have a vehicle capable of towing it? If it's a big hassle to get your boat in the water, you won't use it as often.
If you consider these points before you purchase your boat, you'll have a boat that you truly enjoy. Good fishing and happy boating.
