When I was a child, my first camera was a 110 Instamatic. It wasn't very pretty, but it took the pictures I wanted. That was 1992, when I was 8 years old. Now, 15 years later, children's cameras look much better than the one I had.
There are a couple things to remember when buying a child their first camera.
One is that children are very happy to just take simple snapshots. They do not need the most high tech cameras on the market, therefore, an inexpensive camera is just fine.
Also, a child's first camera should be easy to use, so it is not frustrating for the beginning photographer when they go to take pictures. So the camera should only have the basic functions, flash and shutter that are easy to use.
And last, but not least, the camera should be durable. Children are rough on their things, so a durable camera is desirable.
I think a good choice for a children's camera is the Fisher Price digital camera. It is called Kid-Tough, that would make it durable. Also as no reading is required to use this camera, it should be easy for even very young children to use. The camera also has a wrist strap, making the camera easy to hold onto.
Back in 1992, my first camera took 110 film, and now children can have easy to use, durable digital cameras. If today's technology had existed 15, or more, years ago, I'm sure my parents would have gotten me a camera like that. Perhaps even at a younger age than what I was when I got my first camera.
