Gifts to Share in the Office -
Everyone does it and everyone complains, but I still think food is one of the best things to share in the office during the holidays.
There is always too much to eat over the holidays, and I say so what! If you eat a little bit more that usual, that just gives you a better goal for your New Years' Resolution. Besides, those people who are always talking about their diets and waistlines seem to protest a bit too much, and if one or two extra cookies or pieces of candy are going to wreck the other 11 months of sacrifice, I think you probably have bigger issues.
Bringing food the office to share is a real treat, especially when it is something that you make yourself. The one caveat is, of course, it must be edible. Get an independent opinion on whether what you make is really good, not just something you like - and make sure you do a good job, clean kitchen and all that - dog hair is right out....
Although I am one of the few people on the planet that does NOT have a sweet-tooth, one thing I used to look forward to in the office at Christmas was candy - specifically one colleague's peanut brittle and another's chocolate-rum truffles. I didn't make either, and without the sweet-tooth gene, I had no compulsion to purchase candy, so it was great to have it available in the office.
I also have a taste for ethnic foods, and another friend brought in some traditional Greek sweets, which were very nice, along with some spinach pies, which I liked even better. Not exactly a Christmas standard, but it was a great change from frosted gingerbread and turkey.
I know it wouldn't go over well in the States, but in more enlightened and less litigious countries, homemade liqueurs are well received - just remember, everything in moderation. I particularly liked the homemade Irish Cream in my coffee, we enjoyed in the last status meeting before the Christmas break - very festive.
It's tried and tested, and despite the complaints, everyone has at least a nibble. Share your special holiday (or otherwise) food with your special work friends.
