Most students entering their freshman years of college are concerned with majors. Some people even believe that making the decision about which major you will declare is high up on the list of the most important decisions you will make in your life. This may leave you wonder, "What's the big deal?" What are majors anyway? And, more importantly, why are they so important?
College majors can be defined as a college students main concentration, specialization, or field of study during their undergraduate academic careers. When students declare their majors, they are essentially making a decision to follow the university or college's already established framework for a particular degree in a certain field.
Most colleges and universities in the United States require students to declare their majors either in their first or second years of undergraduate coursework. However, students who are certain that they want to follow a certain path of study are usually able to declare their majors when applying for admission to their school.
In addition to taking courses in their area of specialization, however, students are also required to take additional courses that fulfill general education requirements. Many of these courses include basic introductory classes in physical sciences, social sciences, mathematics, English, and history.
Taking the mystery out of college majors only requires a bit of research on your part. Go online and look up a list of majors offered at your school or at schools that you are applying to. From there you can see what majors will open various career paths to you. Consider what you like to do and pick a career path that suits you.
