If a particular church, (and most do), has surrendered its non - taxable status, by becoming a 501c 3 organization than yes the government can very much so us tax issues to force the church to accept whatever it is that the government wishes to force on it. If however a particular church has not surrendered its non - taxable status, is not a 501c 3 organization(very few do), than no, the government is not able to use tax issues to force the church into practically anything.
It is not required or a law that any church file for and or become a 501c 3 organization. Churches by their very nature, are non taxable. By becoming a 501c 3 a church surrenders its non - taxable status, and accepts a tax exempt status in its place. The church(es)do this willingly.
As a church willingly gives up its non taxable status in favor of the more restrictive tax exempt status, when and if the government decides that a church or churches no longer deserve, for whatever violation, its newly acquired tax exempt status, they can pull the exemption, and the church finds itself in a taxable status, it does not go back to the original non taxable status.
I personally think, and feel that by a church and or its leadership, signing onto and becoming a 501c 3 organization, that they are surrendering the acknowledging the state as its lord, and no longer Jesus, the proper and true Lord of the church, now it is the government who dictates what can and can not be said, and or done. Even if a church, and its leadership may not be in agreement with, they will comply or risk losing their tax exempt status; whereas if they had never given up their non taxable status, it, what they do or do not say, or do would not have to worry about any government interference.
