wall of the house. Since empty freezers use more energy, keep the freezer full. If there is little food in the freezer, fill empty milk jugs or other containers with water and place them in the freezer to fill the empty spaces.

SURGE PROTECTORS:

Electricity is used even when appliances are turned off but remain plugged in. Get power strips to plug in nearby electrical items like TVs, radios, and VCRs. When items are not in use, simply unplug the strip. This saves from having to unplug individual items one at a time.

Surge protectors with joule ratings of 400 to 600 work best. You can also get power surge protectors that connect to the electric panel. This will protect the whole house against daily surges and electrical storm surges.

SOLAR PANELS AND WINDMILL GENERATORS:

If you are young or have a good income, invest on solar panels for your home and install windmill generators. These windmills can generate enough electricity for your home and in most instances, enough energy to sell back to the utility company. The windmills are profitable; they are not just for electric companies. As a homeowner, you too can have your own windmill. They are a growing trend in states like Texas and are rapidly becoming familiar sites. However, do this as soon as possible. Business lobbyists may succeed before long in preventing homeowners from having their own personal windmills.

OTHER ENERGY EFFICIENCY SUGGESTIONS:

Remove the screen saver on your computer and turn off the computer when it will be idle for several hours.

Plant trees on the east and west sides of the house. This can reduce air conditioning costs as much as 30 percent.

CONCLUSION:

Check with your electric company. The staff may provide free energy audits and give you advice in things you can do to save energy.

Finally, there are numerous things you can do to save electricity. Look around your home; you will come up with more ideas. Implement them and the ones mentioned here and you will begin to see lower electric bills.
