How to write love poems

or not?) is not only overzealous for a novice, but usually pretty difficult even for seasoned poets. Instead, think of specific experiences or moments with your lover (in whatever capacity that may be) that you can detail in your own terms. After all, no one will ever be able to write about a moment in your own life more uniquely than you can!
4. Use fresh words and phrases. This is something to keep in mind when writing any poetry, but love poetry, in particular, often brings out the worst in the writer's lexicon. There are many, many, many words that can be used in place of "love" and "beauty" and "happiness," terms that are not only boring, but exist differently for everyone. If you can't think of replacements, grab a thesaurus and get to work!

As in all other poems, consider the form (the way lines and stanzas are broken up both visually and semantically) and verse style (a free verse poem vs. a sonnet, or haiku, or other form that is bound by certain conventions), usage of literary devices (i.e. onomatopoeia, assonance, similes, etc.), and the meter (pace) of the poem. These are all elements that have an effect on the way the poem sounds and will be received by your audience.

Finally, remember this: there are good love poems that are private and good love poems that are "public." Consider your audience and then make a decision on what to do with your poem. Whether you decide to tape it into your diary, mail it to your sweetheart, or shout it from the highest rooftop (you're getting good at recognizing clichs, I hope!) if you follow these suggestions, your love poems are bound to be just as romantic as Shakespeare's!
