POST KATRINA- MY HOUSE SPEAKS
The wind shook my concrete foundation
as flood waters washed away memories
Walls that once held love and tradition
became silent witness
to the waterline
marking fate
My floors that will no longer host the dance
reflect instead a kaleidoscope of mold
My kitchen
once a hub of daily routines
is now an empty shell
My yard is now
cracked mud and weed
and my garden is void of color
No sounds remains
of laughter, joy or pain
Just the promise of a new day
the smell of fresh rain instead of decay
of a community instead of abandon
and of a life returned
transforming what remains of house
back into home
