Family Traditions that Endure Through Life's Seasons
My family celebrates a variety of traditions that lovingly and laughingly cement us as a family unit. Just as "Tradition" is sung out in the musical, "Fiddler on the Roof", our traditions are sung out in our hearts throughout the year.
From our annual Mother's Day photo in the ravine by our home to naming our turkey with a different T name each year as he gets shoved into the oven, our family of six depends on the traditions to pass the seasons, to engrave the memories on our hearts, and, hopefully, one day to pass them on to the next generation.
Perhaps the warmest night of family tradition is our annual Christmas Eve evening. It begins with a non-traditional take out order of Chinese food. The table is spread with egg rolls, wontons, and noodles. After the meal, we bundle up and head to the van. A night of driving through the neighborhoods, admiring the biggest and best decorations is capped off with munching on a bag of chocolate-covered popcorn from a local chocolatier. Finally, we head back home to read the first Christmas story account out of the Bible. This evening, though repeated yearly, is a comfort to each member of our family. If there is any deviation with the evening's plans, the children quickly rise and say, "No, remember Tradition!"
No matter the tradition or the season, the time of sharing a familiar routine, a favorite food, or a time of bonding is an affirmation of the importance of tradtions in a family whether that family is poor or rich, large or small!
