Evaluating the current US laws on abortion

by Ambi

Abortion is a heated topic full of controversy. A lot of the reasoning ties into religious beliefs for the pro-life side, but many people are also pro-choice because they feel it is a woman's choice.

Currently, abortion is legal in the United States, but different states have different restrictions. A handful of states do not require a parent to be notified when a minor has an abortion. But the majority of the states do require that at least one parent be informed before the procedure, or must give consent to the abortion.

Again, with varied restrictions, some states require some form of counseling after an abortion, and some do not. I think it should be mandatory for counseling after this procedure, mainly because how would the woman know what emotions will be presented after? It should be done as merely a mental safety net.

There are also time restrictions as to when a woman can have an abortion. Another great controversy is the partial-birth abortion, which is done in the second or third trimester. At this point in development, the fetus is considered too far in it's developing stages and is considered to be able to survive on it's own. Opposed to a new fetus that would not survive at that stage by itself. Many states deem partial-birth abortions illegal, but some still do perform it.

I myself am pro-choice, but only because I think women should have a choice. There are numerous reasons people have abortions, and unless I am in that situation, I do not want to judge. I do not agree with partial-birth abortions because I think it's much more brutal at that stage, and unless there is a health risk to the mother, it shouldn't be done. There are many people who use abortion as an option of birth control, which is just sickening. It should not be taken lightly or be a decision that is made on a whim. A human life is a big deal, and to consider having an abortion should be done with great consideration.
