There are few actors in Hollywood who offer consistently good performances more often than Denzel Washington. Anytime you are about to see a Washington movie, you know you are about to be entertained with a believable and emotion evoking performance from the star player.
"Deja Vu" is no exception and it scores a par.
Basically, a detective/crime drama with a little bit of time travel thrown in, this film gives you everything a "whodunnit" is supposed to give you. You get clues and questions early in the story and then watch as they slowly unravel to reveal the truth.
Washington carries this film almost entirely by himself. The rest of the roles are mostly forgettable and could have been played by just about anyone.
The film attempts to address subjects such as terrorism and patriotism along with fate, destiny, time travel and whether we have any real ability to control any of it.
Frankly, you would probably get a better time travel movie from "Back to the Future," and a better movie about fate, destiny and the rest from whatever movie you could find on those subjects. This movie is a simple mystery.
Every scene and every line is set up to keep you guessing and wondering who committed the crime and how they did it. The script only touches deeper issues as long as it has to in order to make it relevant to solving the mystery.
As Denzel's character says in the movie, "I don't know how a cell phone works, but I know how to use it." This movie makes no attempt to explain how time travel or fate or destiny works, but it uses those elements to entertain us and entertain us well.
