Blind dating tips

Blind dates can be quite exciting, but also a touch riskier than a first date with a person whom you've met previously. On a blind date you don't even have the advantage of knowing what your date looks like. In addition to all the other issues of getting to know your date, you are entering the situation not even being sure if you find the other person attractive - and anyone who denies that attraction is important is deceiving themselves.

There are some things you can do to make your blind date a little easier. If you do it right and take a good attitude in to a blind date, you can have a good time.

Before you agree to a blind date you should try to get as much info as you can about your date. Odds are you are being set up on this date by a friend. Ask for as many details about your date as you can reasonably expect without pushing too much. If you can, get a general physical description. This is important not only to determine if the date is your "type", but also to make them easier to spot when you are meeting.

You should try to find out a few things about what your date likes to do. Obviously if your date is a vegetarian, you aren't going to want to go to a steak house. If they don't like live music, a night out at the symphony isn't going to be a good idea. The more information you can get, the better a chance you have of making plans with your date with will be fun and enjoyable for both of you.

When you meet your blind date for the first time, it's a good idea to meet in a public place. Unless you are being connected by a very trusted friend or family member, you aren't going to know much about this person. As a general rule, until you've met a person in the real world (not online), it's a good idea to keep things in a public place. Once you have established that your date is not grossly misrepresenting themselves, you can make plans to share rides and be picked up - but for the first blind meeting, keep it public.

Because you and your date are not going to know anything about each other, you want to be sure that you spend your time getting to know the other person. This means that your date should involve conversation. This is a scary thought to some, but if you don't actually talk to your date, you aren't going to learn anything about them. In practical terms this means you should plan something where you can chat. Coffee shops and restaurants are traditional places for a first date, but you can also do less conventional things such as a walk in a park or on a beach. Keep the first blind date simple and easy to plan.

Be sure to avoid things like movies and theater, even if you are both fans of such things. If you go to a movie, you will sit there watching the movie for two hours and emerge knowing nothing more about your date than you did when you walked in. Unless you just spent the rest of the afternoon with the person and choose to go to a late movie, this type of thing is best avoided on a blind date.

The last tip of getting along well on a blind date is to be flexible. Your date is likely just as nervous as you are. You want to impress your date and have a good time. Making plans is good, but you should be ready for plans to change if needed. Because you don't know your date well, you may have an idea that is less than interesting to your date. This doesn't mean that you won't get along, but you should be willing to modify your plans at least a little to keep things fun and prevent a blind date disaster.
