What to know before joining the Army

at war, so these are expected hazards. Although it should go without saying, many people don't realize that during their Army careers they will be asked to take risks and to complete missions at all costs.

DO YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH AUTHORITY?
There will be times during your Army career when you believe wholeheartedly that your leader is wrong. However, in the Army there are different levels of wrong. Unlawful orders are one thing (you don't have to obey an order if it is, indeed, unlawful), but orders that are just a pain in your behind are another. You've got to be able to carry yourself in what we call a "military manner," and that means being respectful of those who outrank you - even if they are wrong.

If you've answered these questions and feel that you can handle Army life, it's definitely time for you to get serious and speak with a recruiter. There are some things you need to know before you get friendly, though - and the following tips will save you a lot of headache later on.

THE ASVAB
In order to get into the Army, you've got to take a test. It's called the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery), but it's not a typical test. You'll be asked questions on everything from math to English, and from cooking to electrical wiring. You'll get several scores on this test, and they will help the military determine which field you'll do best in.

YOUR JOB
A job in the Army is called an MOS (Military Occupational Specialty). There are hundreds of MOS's available, and your ASVAB scores will determine which ones you are eligible for. If you score well in language and poorly in mechanical skills, they'll steer you away from being a mechanic. Make sure to have a wide variety of jobs that you're willing to do so that you don't get "stuck" in something you hate.

YOUR BONUS
Most enlistees will qualify for a bonus; however, there is a catch. You must have a diploma (not a GED) and the right ASVAB scores to get a signing bonus. Your recruiter will tell you which MOS's are offering bonuses, so take that into account when picking your job. If you enlist without getting one, you'll most likely regret it later - especially when your friends are getting theirs.

YOUR FIRST DUTY STATION
Contrary to popular belief, you can get your first duty station guaranteed. If you want to be stationed in Hawaii, for example, your recruiter can put it in writing for you. He can tell you until he's blue in the face that it's not possible, but all you have to do is tell him you're going
