Traditions are very important to our family. No matter if it is Easter, Thanksgiving,Christmas or New Years, if there is a holiday we have a tradition. Out of all of them my favorite is Christmas. The snow falling from the sky, the sounds of Christmas music filling the air, all of the lights and decoration that cover all the houses, children doing there best to behave so they can obtain there presents, and making pierogies at Grandma's house.
She always started making pierogies the Saturday before Christmas. She would wear a red festive sweater and a jingle bell around her neck. All six of us grandchildren would arrive around nine o'clock in the morning. After we took our coats off she would gather us in a single file line to wash our hands. Then she would pass out aprons to all of us. My favorite apron was the Frosty the Snowman one she had. After we were done getting prepared we would all gather around the dinning room table, where she had all of the ingredients ready to go. She would give us each a special job to do. My sister April would pour the flour, my cousin Courtney would break the eggs and we would go down the line until the dough was made. My favorite duty was kneading the dough. I loved the feeling of the sticky substance between my fingers, that is when Christmas started for me. When we were done making the dough, Grandma would take the dough out of the bowl and cut it into little balls. Then she would roll the little balls out on parchment paper. All of us would be waiting with our round cookie cutters in hand. We each got our own dough to cut. After we were done cutting our dough we would take turns rolling out our dough circles with the rolling pin. Grandma took pride in her rolling pin. It was an old wooden one that her mother gave her. Then we would get ready to fill our pierogies.
This tradition has been in our family for many generation. My Grandma to this day still makes pierogies the Saturday before Christmas. Unfortunately my sister and cousins do not engage in this tradition anymore. Now it is only my children and myself that come over Grandma's to make our Christmas pierogies. My sister and cousins still come over to eat them on Christmas though.
